Gorilla trekking isn’t your average hike. You’ll be venturing deep into tropical highland forests, sometimes for hours, through thick vegetation and uneven, slippery terrain. Whether you’re trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, or Virunga in DR Congo, the experience can be physically demanding – and the weather unpredictable.
That’s why packing correctly will make or break your experience.
Pack comfortable, waterproof hiking boots with strong grip. The trails are often steep, muddy, and slippery – especially in the rainy season. Avoid sneakers or open shoes.
Pro Tip: Break in your boots before the trip to avoid blisters.
Protect your skin from thorny plants, insects, and stinging nettles by wearing long, lightweight trekking trousers and long-sleeved, breathable tops. Quick-dry fabrics are best.
Rain is common in the rainforest – even during the dry season. Always carry a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho to stay dry and comfortable.
You’ll likely need to hold onto branches or vegetation for balance. Gloves protect your hands from scratches, insect bites, and irritation from plants.
Gaiters help keep mud, water, and crawling insects (especially safari ants) out of your boots. If you don’t have gaiters, tuck your pants into high socks for protection.
Due to gorillas’ sensitivity to human illnesses, face masks are mandatory during treks. Bring multiple masks and carry hand sanitizer.
The rainforest is home to mosquitoes and other bugs. Pack a strong DEET-based insect repellent to apply to exposed skin.
Even under the canopy, sunburn is possible. Carry broad-spectrum sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a wide-brimmed hat or cap.
Trekking can last up to 6 hours. Stay hydrated with a refillable bottle or hydration bladder (at least 2 liters).
Bring energy bars, trail mix, or dried fruit to keep your energy up. A packed lunch is provided by most lodges, but snacks are a must.
You’ll have just one precious hour with the gorillas, so make it count. Pack a good-quality camera with a zoom lens, extra batteries, and memory cards.
Flash photography is strictly prohibited to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
Carry all your items in a small, waterproof backpack with compartments for snacks, a rain jacket, water, and camera gear.
While the highlight is gorilla viewing, you may also spot forest elephants, monkeys, and over 300 bird species. Binoculars enhance the experience.
Hiring a porter (usually ~$15–$20 USD) is optional but highly recommended. They can help carry your backpack and offer a hand through tough terrain. Most porters are locals or students – hiring one directly supports the community.
Packing the right gear ensures you’re fully prepared for an unforgettable adventure in the wild heart of East Africa. Whether you’re trekking the slopes of Bwindi or exploring the misty volcanoes of Rwanda, being prepared will keep you safe, dry, and fully immersed in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
